Peaky Blinders

Written By: Pat Oklejewicz

Although being highly productive is one of the trademarks of the staff at Spa 23, we all need our downtime. I spent most of my nights watching my favorite Netflix show, Peaky Blinders. The show starts off in 1919, a year after the first world war and follows a small group of Irish bookmakers living in Birmingham England. The show follows this family’s history from a small bookmaking gang, to a powerful empire of import and export of goods with dominating political power of early 1920’s England. I personally love the theme of the show, utilizing finely tailored early 20th century suits and the stylistic approach to the habits of the day, such as an astronomical intake of whiskey and cigarettes, that is made to look so elegant and well, gangster.

The leader of this crime family, named Tommy Shelby has a serious set of complexities in character that combine traits of cold brutish behavior with heartfelt moments of care for the family.

All of the men in the family are veterans of WWI, which gives depth to their characters and explanation for their outlasted actions and tendencies. The show is a great watch that gives an immersive experience to really feel what it would be like to live in a stylized version of the roaring 20’s. With a total of five seasons and a sixth on the way, this is a show that will definitely give you something to do on your downtime while in quarantine.
